Educational trip to Alipore jail museum
The students of Loreto Day School Bowbazar of class XI were taken for an educational excursion to the Alipore Jail Museum on 13th March, 2024, a historic landmark in the crux of Kolkata. It was established in 1906. This 116-year-old building spans an area of 15.2 acres. The colonial-era institution encompasses various buildings, including prison cells, wards, the Alipore Jail Press Building, the Central Watchtower, and the Alipore Jail Hospital building. The museum stands as a commemorative to honour the sacrifices of those who fought for India's independence and bears witness to the brutalities inflicted upon freedom fighters.
Alipore Central Correctional Home now has exhibits showcasing artefacts, documents, and photographs related to its history and notable inmates. Prominent freedom fighters like Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose, Chittaranjan Das, Dinesh Gupta, and Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy were incarcerated here.
During the visit, our school explored the cells of Jawaharlal Nehru, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, and Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, the structure of the Cellular Jail and an exhibition showcasing life inside the cells and gallows. The museum provided a glimpse into the colonial-era prison system in India, offering students an opportunity to learn about the British colonial past.
The excursion expanded students' knowledge beyond textbooks, enhancing their understanding of the subject. We gained a deeper understanding of the historical significance of the Alipore Jail Museum and its contribution to India's freedom struggle.
